Sometimes to prepare to help someone grieve because at some point, you know you’re going to have to even if they don’t know it yet; you have to arm yourself with as much information as possible about the condition because if one breaks down, it will defeat the purpose of being the shoulder to lean on. One needs to be able to with all sincerity say “You did everything in your power, you did everything you knew how to”. This is going to sound weird to my readers, friends, family and coworkers... I’m not planning to go anywhere anytime soon, but my degree is in Human Services and many of you have been asking where I’m going as soon as I obtain it. I just found the application to volunteer at Shiners and a close friends’ relative was given a diagnosis of prostatic cancer. One needs to arm herself with as much information as possible should she be that shoulder. www.caring.com a website for care givers and families tells us what we already know as a society, many men don’t know they have it until it has progressed because they don’t want to make a big deal out of nothing is usually the standard response.

The first signs that one should be aware of and mention that they make an appointment to see a medical professional should be because something as trivial as: trouble urinating, anything from the urge to go and nothing coming of it, ceasing mid-stream, they may not be able to stop. To the more serious symptoms such as: pain while going is said to be indicative of a tumor “pressing down on the urethra or an infection medically known as: “benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland” as well as the less common blood in the stream which might appear as a pinkish tent, it may also be a sign of a Urinary Tract Infection. These are all the signs I am comfortable posting if this is illness is a subject of concern to you or members of your family; please visit: http://www.caring.com/articles/more-signs-of-prostate-cancer-that-often-go-unnoticed.

As with all cancerous encounters, the earlier they’re detected, the earlier treated. Internal Radiation Treatment is used attempt to rid the body of the illness, the most popular is called Brachytherapy which may be used with people who have cancers of the head, neck, breast, uterus, cervix, prostate, gall bladder, esophagus, eye, and lung. Liquid forms of internal radiation are most often used with people who have thyroid cancer or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. One may also consider internal radiation along with other types of treatment, including external beam radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery. 1 in 34 men will die of prostate cancer, I hope my friend’s father is not that one. This kind of cancer is not friend to anyone diagnosed. The older one gets, and the number of health problems the patient has, the dimmer the outlook for the surviving members of the family.

The tragic and morbidly uplifting about the possibility of volunteering for Shiner’s Hospital is that one is around children and don’t have time to worry about their own petty life problems as one has to listen to the needs, wants, and dreams of the patients and do whatever one must to aid them and their families through recovery. The hospital cares for individuals that a a myriad of challenges from orthopedics to psychological issues. One of the conditions facing me is called “The Port Wine Spot” and no it has nothing to do with what it sounds like. The condition affects 3 in every 1000 children and poses as a birthmark that can place itself on the forehead, legs and arms. Stains cannot be prevented and is not a result of any action taken during pregnancy. The treatment is slightly painful laser surgery and younger children will be under a local anesthetic. I’d like to do more research on MHE(Multiple Hereditary Exostosis) which is said to be an inherited disorder dealing with the stunned bone growth. “exostosis is a bone growth that is abnormal or different from the underlying architecture of the normal bone. The exostosis is covered by a cartilage cap. These abnormal growths are benign. Sometimes doctors refer to exostosis as tumor, which is in general term meaning a mass and does not imply a malignancy or cancer. Exostoses start near the growth plates bones that are located near the ends of the bones. This explains why exostoses grow near joints and may hinder motion. The exostosis can be pedunculated, rounded, or sharp and continue to grow while a child is growing. When a person is full grown, exostoses usually stop growing. This type of career was suggested at 17, hopefully I’ve developed more backbone.
